Infamous live-action Mario movie to get an expensive re-release

The Super Mario Bros animated flick has dominated the box office, but now this may have led to the release of the duo’s first movie.

The Super Mario Bros has become one of the biggest movies of 2023 so far, having well passed the $1 billion mark. As a collaboration between Nintendo and Despicable Me’s Illumination, the animated flick boasts a major cast with Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Seth Rogen, and Jack Black.

However, this is not the only Mario movie out there. In fact, there was an infamous live-action outing in 1993, which has gone down as one of the worst movies of that year, if not that decade.

However, there likely isn’t a movie out there that doesn’t have a single fan, and thus the live-action Mario movie has actually garnered somewhat of a cult following over the years. So they will be happy to know that to mark the film’s 30th anniversary, a special edition 4K release is coming.

Super Mario Bros. to get a 4K release

Adapted from Nintendo’s video game franchise of the same name, the 1993 movie follows this plot: “Brooklyn plumbers Mario and Luigi get the shock of their lives when they discover a parallel world populated by the intelligent descendants of dinosaurs. It seems they weren’t destroyed by a meteor millions of years ago but hurled into another dimension and, now, they have plans to rule our world. It’s up to our unlikely heroes to battle the evil King Koopa and his Goomba guards, free the beautiful Princess Daisy and save mankind in this adventure of a lifetime.”

The movie bombed the box office, earning $38.9 million on a budget of over $40 million. Not only that, it has since earned a 29% Critics Rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with only its special effects ever receiving praise. This was likely due to the film portraying the world of Mario as an odd dystopia, rather than the bright and colorful world that fans love.

But despite this infamy, the movie is set to receive a special anniversary box set release from Umbrella Home Entertainment. This will feature a 4K Ultra HD edition of the movie, complete with three discs, two Blu-rays, behind-the-scenes books, film cells, art cards, posters, stickers, new audio commentary, and newly-restored deleted scenes and trailers.
